Do you have enough calls for a closer to stay?

The number one reason a closer hire fails isn't the profile, it's the volume. 4 numbers are enough to know whether your mission can support them, or whether they'll leave after six weeks.

Not yet: a closer wouldn't stay.

$4,320per month for the closer

Below $5,000 per month, a mission slips into second place and the closer usually leaves between week six and week ten. You're $680 per month short.

The math: 40 appts × 18% closing = 7.2 sales × $4,000 = $28,800 in revenue, of which 15% goes to the closer.

Why closers leave after six weeks

A freelance closer lives on commissions. When a mission doesn't pay enough to be their priority, they don't quit outright: they take a second offer on the side, your mission slips into second place, their rates drop, and they leave between week six and week ten. You've paid for the hiring and onboarding for nothing, and your leads were under-worked for two months. That's why the only question that matters before hiring isn't "how much does it cost me" but "how much does it pay THEM".

How to count the calls in your ecosystem

Count only qualified appointments that actually happened: prospect present, within your target, with the intent to buy one day. No-shows and window shoppers don't feed a closer. Take the average of your last 2 or 3 months rather than your record, and if your volume swings a lot from month to month, run the test with your weakest month: that's the one your closer will have to get through without leaving.

Below the threshold: volume first, commission second

If the verdict is negative, the tool quantifies both levers. Raising the commission works when you're close to the threshold: the usual range sits between 10 and 20% of cash collected, the breakdown by offer type is in our guide what commission to give a closer. If the gap is too wide, no realistic percentage will close it: you need more appointments, through your acquisition or by first hiring a setter or a cold caller, whose job is precisely that.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the threshold $5,000 per month?

It's the commission level below which a closing mission can't be a good profile's priority. The closer keeps your mission in second place, takes another offer on the side, and usually leaves between week six and week ten, right when they were starting to know your offer. Hiring below this threshold costs onboarding time for an almost certain departure.

What counts as a qualified appointment that happened?

An appointment where the prospect actually showed up and matches your target. No-shows, out-of-budget window shoppers and unconfirmed appointments don't count: count the appointments that actually happened over the last 2 or 3 months and take the average, not your best month.

I'm below the threshold: should I raise the commission?

It's the right lever only if you're close. The usual market range is between 10 and 20% of cash collected: if the tool says you'd need more than 25%, commission won't make up for insufficient volume, and you'd destroy your margin. In that case the real lever is appointment volume: acquisition, a setter or a cold caller to fill the calendar.

I don't have that volume yet: what do I do?

Keep closing yourself while working on your acquisition, it's the best way to learn how to delegate later. You can also hire a setter or a cold caller first: their job is precisely to generate the appointments that will make a closer viable later.
